June 7, 2016
Students and community members gathered May 10 to watch as the school retired its first athletic jersey. The jersey retired, #11, which belonged to 2007 graduate Emanuel Davis.
As covered by the TSN (THE SPORTS NETWORK), Davis is a former Manteo football player who went on to play at East Carolina and then spent some time with Cleveland Browns. Now, Davis is active with Hamilton Tiger Cats in the Canadian Football League. Davis ranks among the top five in all-time pass breakups (36) and 11th in interceptions at ECU, where he studied communications. He was all-pro in 2015.
TSN was in Manteo May 9 and 10 filming as they intend to run a feature on Davis about his life story, which will air during the opening game this year that will be televised by ESPN. At this ceremony, Davis was introduced to the student body by several former coaches before he spoke and had his jersey retired.
