Bernie Sanders, visionary, presidential hopeful, and the man behind the self dubbed “political revolution” promoted by the Sanders campaign. Sanders is hopeful that young liberal voters will support his cause, that is, if they show up to vote.

Sanders’ entire campaign is based on rallying the youth of today to secure the future of tomorrow. His critics say that his ideas are unrealistic, that they’ll be impossible to pull off in the long run. Hillary Clinton, one of Sanders’ biggest adversaries, says that she has the same ideas, but they’ll take a little longer to accomplish. Many students like Sanders because he’s making promises of equality and justice. He seems to be the only politician that’s got his head on straight.

Aside from being sane, what is it about him that is getting young voters excited about politics? What is it about Bernie? Unlike his opponents, he doesn’t pander to personal motives or popular opinion; he does what he believes is right.

Let’s be honest with ourselves, the price for higher education in America today is ridiculous. According to Forbes, the projected cost of an elite college from 2018-2021 could reach up to $334,000 for a four year degree. To put things in perspective, you could buy a new Ferrari and a small plane for that amount of money. If elected, Sanders is promising free or reduced-cost tuition for the first two years of public universities. I don’t know about you, but that offer sounds pretty appealing to me!

Another one of Sanders’ goals is to provide adequate, affordable healthcare for every American citizen, regardless of income. This is a major problem facing our country today, and something that current President Barack Obama tried to solve with Obamacare and the Affordable Care Act. While Sanders voted in favor of the ACA, he believes that it wasn’t enough and more work needs to be done.

Marijuana, dangerous substance or miracle drug? Sanders sees the latter, and hopes to legalize recreational and medical marijuana in all 50 states, helping thousands combat disease and work to find a cure, legally. Although research of medical marijuana is still in its infancy, Sanders believes that it can be a tremendous aid, and help the United States to lead in world medical standards.

These, along with Sanders’ other plans for the future of our nation give him a strong appeal to our youth. This generation may be the first to really see to the major challenges we face as a nation today. Millennials are realizing that they need to look up from their smart-phones and start thinking about the future. For a long time, there has been a lot of talk and little action in American politics. Yet, with Sanders’ voice and our youth’s action, we might just have a sliver of hope.
